Smt.Sushma Swaraj met with a group of foreign students sponsored by ICCR studying in Delhi on 10th November. This is symbolic of India's efforts to "build bridges by sharing knowledge and education".These scholars represent 15 countries(Mongolia. Laos, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Poland, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Fiji, Russia, Uzbekistan,Croatia)Since 1952, ICCR has been giving scholarships to foreign students. Over the years,the number of scholarships and the variety of schemes(country-specific, region-specific, subject specific) have grown and today ICCR has 8 schemes of its own and 16 schemes which it implements on behalf of MEA/AYUSH.For 2014-15, ICCR offered 3338 slots.In the last academic 2013-14,ICCR had 5178 foreign scholars and the numbers for the academic session 2014-15 have increased to around 6400 (some students are still coming)
ICCR scholars are admitted to Graduation, Post Graduation, Ph.D and Post Doctoral courses. The scholars are spread over 20 States and in over 110 institutions across India representing around 120 countries.Courses covered include humanities and liberal arts, science, engineering, commerce and management.
In recent months, ICCR has made a concerted effort to establish/energize ICCR Alumni Groups. During Smt.Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Mauritius, establishment of ICCR Alumni group was announced and Vice Prime Minister Anil Bachoo agreed to become its Patron.
