AMRITSAR: A day after filing of
complaint against Punjab local bodies minister Anil Joshi in the court, Punjab
Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has demanded that an FIR be lodged under relevant
sections of the IPC against the BJP leader and his family members who had
allegedly registered as voters from two places and for forgery.
PPCC has also demanded custodial
interrogation of all accused. In a joint statement issued here on Wednesday PPCC
vice-presidents O P Soni and Sardul Singh, general secretary Harpartap Singh
Ajnala, secretary Karamjit Singh Rintu and district congress committee (rural)
chief Gurjit Aujla said, "The Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked
the Amritsar election returning officer (ERO) to file a criminal case against
Joshi and his family members, but the deputy commissioner (DC) has opted to
file a complaint in the court of the chief judicial magistrate."
They alleged that it was an attempt
to save the minister. They said that an offence under Section 31 of
Representation of Peoples Act was non-cognizable and would require immediate
arrest of the accused.
The Congress leaders alleged that
Joshi had fabricated documents to enroll as voters at two places and he should
also be booked under sections 420 (cheating),468 (forgery) and 120 (criminal
conspiracy) of the IPC. They also demanded to book DCs of Amritsar and Tarn
Taran under Section 201 of the IPC for destroying the evidence. "The DCs,
who were EROs, had given the report to Election Commission that documents
submitted by Joshi were not traceable," the Congress leaders mentioned in
their statement.
They also alleged that the Punjab
chief electoral officer (CEO) was soft-paddling the issue. "He should
issue specific orders to register an FIR in the police station," they
stated.
